Margaret & Janis

" We express our love of textiles though teaching what we love and inspiring others to try something new."

Janis

My interest in textiles and design started in the scrap pile at my mother’s feet. The first "clients" were my Troll dolls – sporting fancy "jackets with sashes." My creative clothing and textile interests led me to create custom clothing for myself and others from high school into the present.

In 1983 I started at FIDM in San Francisco with a focus on Fashion Design – my love being draping – using the dress form to create the designs utilizing how the fabric "spoke" to me. I am of the it’s not done till it’s overdone camp and love embellishing and detailing. This has given me a wonderful chance to work with many brides in creating for their special day. A one stop service – from dresses to accessories including decorated shoes is how I have come to be known.

I love working with my mother, though I cannot really call it work, we refer to it as genetically unavoidable and you can find us digging through piles of fabric and trims looking for just the right one. Another way for us to express this love is to teach what we love and inspire others to try something new.

Currently I find my creative life well diversified to include teaching, custom bridal, quilt design, jewelry and soft model proto types for Industrial design clients.

Margaret

My interest in textiles and design started with sewing doll clothes and doll bedding at age three and progressed to paper dolls soon after. I was never satisfied with available options, even at an early age, and had to create my own paper creations.

I maintained an interest in all things related to personalized clothing statements – even though academically I was a class nerd (math, science and history in college).

My creative clothing and textile interests led me to weaving (loom and off loom), basketry, fabric manipulation and stitchery. I was fortunate enough to be noticed and juried into California Fibers in San Diego in the 70’s. Through California Fibers, an exhibiting Textile Arts group, I was asked to teach in Laguna Beach and Bazaar Del Mundo in San Diego. I loved sharing and learning from other creative souls.

After moving to the Bay Area in 1978, I created primarily for myself and family but my desire for interesting wearables AND a daughter in the fashion industry brought me back to sharing this love of creative clothing and creative home accessories in the late 1990’s. Today my closet again bursts with my personally created clothing.

Along the way I have a renewed interest in quilts, loving anything vintage, William Morris and Civil War being two personal favorites.
